About Barry

In 1982 there were 4 friends that rode in their first PMC,
(L-R) Mike Labonte, Mark MacKenzie, Mike Brown and myself, as we
waited for the start of the 1982 Pan Mass Challenge
I am a 52 year television production professional and a father of five. Since 1982, I have been a serious bicyclist, riding for the pleasure of the sport and as a fund raiser for cancer research and treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

This year I am making an attempt at crossing the United States for my own personal reasons and as a fund raiser for the Farber.
My dream of riding a bicycle across the country began in 1982 while I was training for my first of 28 Pan-Massachusetts Challenge bicycle rides for the Jimmy Fund. The lure of the road under the tires was all I needed to begin thinking about my dream ride. It wasn't until 1990 when I began to seriously think about it. Then in October 2009, my wife Cindy wanted to bring another cat into the house. I said OK, only if I could do a cross country bicycle ride. To my surprise, she said yes.

Staring Jan 1, 2011 (1/1/11- the number 1111 is my lucky number) I will begin my training and make my final plans for this adventure. I first want to say thank you to my wife Cindy for not only saying yes, but for her support. And to my kids for their support. This site will become my connection to my cross country with updates via text and videos.

My history with the PMC began in 1982 when my dad brought home a pamphlet from a local bicycle shop about this fund raising bicycle ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown. The only thing I had to do was raise $350. No problem, it took me two days to raise $400. In 1982, the PMC was a September event. It was a bit chilly when my dad dropped me off at Old Sturbridge Village. Two days later, my dad came to pick me up in Sturbridge after I complete the most excitng weekend of riding a bicycle to Provincetown. It wa the first time I was on Cape Cod.  I WAS HOOKED!!!!

For 28 years now, I have been an active part of ther PMC, not only as a fund raising bicyclist, but as a behind the scenes volunteer. Using my back ground as a television professional and a big strong guy, I assisted the PMC in many areas. I helped stuff informational and registration packets in the pre-Internet days, help set-up the Sturbridge Host Hotel starting line, set-up for opening ceremonies, provide technical equipment for opening ceremonies, produce video's and direct opening ceremoines and be instrumental in getting my former employer, New England Cable News, to become the media sponsor for the PMC from 1999-2010.

And today, I take on the second most important role in the event weekend, and that is to PMC's Road Signage Coordinator. I lead one of three crews that place the directional arrows along the 10 routes that the PMC riders follow on their way to their destinations.
