Montana

Day 9
After cresting Lolo Pass early in the day, a rest day tomorrow will most likely feel good.  I will climb up to 5, 240 feet over a 30 mile stretch and descend as much as I ascend into Missoula, Montana, the location of my second scheduled day off the bike.

Day 11
Today, I will be traveling on my first interstate highway, I-90. This is the same I-90 that everyone in Massachusetts knows and have traveled on, the Massachusetts Turnpike. Today, I hope to ride 85 miles and hope to end up at the KOA in Deer Lodge, MT.

Day 12
Another day of riding on Interstate 90 thru Montana. The past two days of riding give you an indication of how my mileage changes day to day. Todays 65 miles is what my average day is suppose to be. I hope to end up in Whitehall, MT

Day 13
Todays ride is 55 miles, but is excepted to be more difficult than yesterdays mileage on I-90 because of the long highway climbs. all to be expected riding in the Rocky Mountains. End point today is Belgrade, MT

Day 14
It will be my fourth day on Interstate 90 riding. Yesterdays shorter day should give me a chance to rest for todays 80 miles to the Big Timber, MT KOA campground.

Day 15
According to my mapping software, this stretch of I-90 from Big Timber to Billings is "rather flat", well, for mountain interstates anyway. It's been a long stretch today, 70 miles, but tomorrows rest day in Billings will be greatly appreciated. So far to date, I should ridden 913 miles for the trip.

Day 16 Rest Day Billings, MT
If it wasn't so far away, I considered visiting the Schively Ranch, the working cattle ranch I spent time at back in '95 and '97. But I think resting will do me better.

Day 17
Even though I have been riding on Interstate 90 and not seen "towns" very much, todays 64 miles will be just as barren of civilization once I get to my end point, Crow Agency. This American Indian community sports a casino. I'm thinking of spending the night here and testing my luck.

Day 18
Today begins several day of "civilization-less" riding. These next days are in the foothills of the eastern side of the Rockies. It will test my mental strength in the seemingly endless riding alone. And it will be the first day that I don't know where I will be camping out for the night in Ashland, MT. 64 miles today. Today is a mile stone in milestones.....1038 miles ridden from Seattle. I usually training these many miles per summer as I prepare for the Pan Mass Challenge.

Day 19

Being that I will be riding "so alone", todays 44 miles to Broadus, MT will keep me sane. Plus the short day will act like a half-day rest.

Day 20
My last day of riding in a vast ocean of "alone-less" brings me 57 miles to Alzada, MT. Tomorrow, people living along side the road.

Day 21
Finally, Montana is behind me. I will ride through Wyoming for only a short distance (14 miles) before I arrive in South Dakota and pass thru the old west town of Belle Fourche and finish the 54 mile day in Spearfish
