The PMC On Television
Since 1999, my former employer, New England Cable News (NECN), has been telling the stories of the PMC as the official television station of the PMC.
I worked at NECN from 1992 to 1998 as a director and master control tech. Just prior to the 1998 check presentation and after my departure from NECN, I mentioned to then NECN president, Philip Balboni, that the PMC was going to be celebrating its' 20th year the following summer. Mr. Balboni said that NECN should do something to help celebrate that milestone. At that moment, NECN became highly involved in the extrodinary success of the PMC.
NECN begins its' coverage of he PMC in the spring by bringing to their viewers stories of researchers, physicians and patients at the Dana Farfber Cancer Institute as well as riders and volunteers of the PMC. Their coverage continues through out the summer, leading up to their LIVE broadcast of the PMC Opening Ceremonies from the Sturbridge Host Hotel in Sturbridge, MA. on the Friday night of PMC weekend.
Starting the first thing on Saturday morning, NECN continues its' LIVE coverage of the event as the riders depart from Sturbridge and Wellesley on their way to Provincetown. On Saturday night, NECN broadcasts LIVE from the overnight home of the riders, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne. NECN shows highlights of the riders on the routes and interviews of riders, volunteers and residents along the route.
After a good nights rest, NECN will follow the riders to the finish lines at Babson College in Wellesley, which is also a starting line for two of the PMC's routes. At 7pm, NECN broadcasts a LIVE, one hour wrap up show of the PMC weekend.
